understand?

Lets say you were in the Military and every time there was a Guard Mount Formation you walked away as the Supernumerary. Not just once, but every single time without exception. How do you explain that concept to someone who has never served? How do explain it to some one that has served but never stood Guard Mount? How do you tell the story of how, and why, you were targeted and held back by the military even when you were the best of the best? Who would even understand?

Perhaps you took a job in a small retail lumber yard. You were able to update their Functional Files, while implementing their first ever stocking system, creating automated replenishing systems along with storage to shelf consistent labeling. How do you explain the magnitude of that accomplishment to someone that has never received, stocked, shelved and replenished an item? When you explain that you were lied to and told if you did all of those things you would be promoted. Who would get your disappointment?

Maybe you took a job in a Shipping and Receiving Center that had no design foot print for the facility and had product placed anywhere space was available. You established, which means you designed and had them painted on the floor, to your specifications, "forklift traffic lanes", "Cross Docking Procedures", "Dedicated LTL Prepping" Locations, and a "Master Floor Plan" for Loading Long Distance Carriers. You turned a failing facility into a "5 Star" location. How could anyone who has not worked in Warehouse Operations possibly see the magnificence of such a feat? How do you explain that after eleven, long, years a "Cost Effectiveness Team" was sent to your facility by corporate, and after that visit they reported that your position was no longer needed, not having seen the beginning, the long hours and toil that you spent out on the dock, on a forklift, teaching and grooming your team, that it took to get to what they were now seeing. Who would even get it?

What if you were in Sales and you constantly were the Salesman of the Month? You were the only Salesperson to always qualify for the Demo Program month after month. You were making so much on Bonus Level Payouts that your pay plan had to be adjusted by Management? How could anyone other than another successful salesperson even grasp the enormity of that accomplishment? How do you tell someone that you moved on because you were never offered a salaried Manager position?

What if you took a Corporate Training Role with a Fortune 500 company and did so well at the job that your customer facing performance reviews were off the chart. So much so that the company changed the promotion scorecard from customer facing to an internal team assessment style. How do explain that your team and superiors were so intimidated by you that they assigned spies to follow you around to record your trainings, and then rewrote the training policy manual to make your style the "not accepted style". How do you explain that you were never promoted because of bias. Only a person that has done exactly what you have done would even understand.

This is why when you tell your family and friends your story, they often look at you like you are crazy. This is why those friends that try to understand your story sometimes think you are lying. This is why some of you do not tell your story, because you simply do not have anyone to explain it too. The moral of this story is: For those of you who have gone places, and done things that most have not, don't feel bad when they do not understand. The fact of the matter is that they simply do not have a point of reference. So go ahead and tell your story anyway. Why? Because it is yours, and only Iron sharpens Iron.
